-Since it is similar fractions, only subtract the whole numbers and the numerators. = 2  2/5

4  3/5 - 2 1/4

-Since it is dissimilar fractions. Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of the fractions so the denominators will be the same.  3/5 = 12/20   1/4 = 5/20  because the LCD is 20.
-Then subtract the whole numbers and the numerators.
= 4  12/20 - 2 5/20 = 2  7/20
