What are the basics in trying to solve linear equations. Please share to me your strategies. =))

First, you have to have the unknown variable, for it has only one variable to solve.
Second, isolate the ones without the given variable to be solved; remember to change signs(transpose the unnecessary ones)
Then, if you could, combine some of it like constants and variables.
Lastly, if the variable is with a numeral coefficient, divide it thorough the coefficient.
Example: 2y + 3 = 12    y = ?

actually you can choose either you will use the substitution or elimination, in substitution, you must assume 1st that a variable x=0 or any nonnegative real numbers, then substitute.
