THE DANGEROUS HELPER

A Leak in the Dike Hans was a six-year-old Dutch boy. He lived in Holland, country which had been partly reclaimed from the sea.

To prevent the water from flooding the land, thick dikes were built along the coast. Along one side of the dikes was the sea, its waters dashing against the dikes. On the land slide were fertile farms producing an abundant crop of different kinds of vegetables.

Hans's father worked along with other farmers on these farms, which provided the families with daily needs as well as supplies to be sold in the public market. Hans's father was not a rich man but he was very industrious in cultivating his farm, and his family lived comfortably. Each day at noon, Hans brought his father lunch and helped him all afternoon until the two would go home together.

One day, Hans's mother told him to come home after giving his father his lunch because she needed him in

the household tasks. So, after his father had eaten, Hans picked up the basket where he had carried the lunch and started for home.

He walked along a dike, whistling a merry tune, eager to get home and help his mother. As he was on his way,

he noticed a trickle of water flowing along the base of the dike. He knew very well that a trickle of water meant a leak

in the dike, so he hurriedly traced the trickle to its source. He found it coming from a small hole.

Hans knew that a break in the dike would destroy all the farms along the dike. As he came nearer, he saw the

hole where the water seeped. Without hesitation, he put his finger in the hole to stop the leak. But the hole grew

bigger so Hans thrust his arm to fill the hole. He tried to think of what he should do. If he ran back to his father and

the other men for help, he knew that the leak would rapidly grow larger and larger, and the water would rush in and

destroy the farms.

Hans was a brave boy. He kept his arm into the leak to stop the flow of water. Nobody saw him; nobody came

to help him. The farmers were all busy tending to their farms. The hours passed and Hans felt his arm getting numb;

he felt as if it was getting paralyzed. The sharp pains began going up his arm. He wanted to pull it out for the pain was

growing stronger. He began to feel it creeping up his shoulders but he kept his arm steady. He was a brave and

courageous boy, and he would not allow the leak to get bigger.

After hours of suffering, Hans felt that he was going to faint. Everything he saw seemed to be turning around

and around. He felt that he was going to die if he did not take his arm out of the hole. But he kept his arm firmly in the

leak. He had to keep the sea away from the farms. He closed his eyes and prayed that someone would come, but no

one came. The pain in his arm was growing more and more unbearable but his courageous enabled him to remain in

his position.

At last, it was time for the farmers to go home. They saw Hans kneeling before the dike. They ran to him and

saw him looking pale and exhausted, but he still kept his arm in the leak. His father pulled him out and the other men

attended the leak. Hans was so weak that he could hardly stand. His father proudly carried him home.

Next day, people came to visit Hans. They brought him gifts. They called him a very brave boy. He was their little hero.
