Distance is a scalar quantity. It has magnitude but no direction. However, if you describe an object's motion in terms of distance traveled in a particular direction from it's reference point , then you are referring to its displacement. Displacement is a vector quantity. Both magnitude and direction are required for its description. A displacemet of 3m west means a distance of 3 metres is travelled toward the west.
Distance is the total length of space travelled while displacement is the straight distance from the origin to the terminal point.
