The heart and lungs work closely together by ensuring that the body has enough oxygen-rich blood for it to function properly. The heart and lungs should function well in order for the respiratory system to be in its topmost condition. - The heart is a muscular organ and its primary role is to pump blood throughout the body. The heart functions in two parts: the right part receives the deoxygenated blood and it pumps it to the lungs.
