The only living things that make their own food are plants. Plants use some of their food themselves
and store in their leaves, roots, stems, seeds, and flowers that they do not need. Plants take carbon
dioxide from the air, and water and minerals from the soil. Through the process called
photosynthesis, green plants use the energy from the sun to turn carbon dioxide and water into
carbohydrates. The chlorophyll, a green substance in the leaves, makes it possible to the plants to
use the sun's energy.
