Fingerprints were used in United States to prevent forgery on any important documents on using thumb prints. I know you are thinking instead of using thumb prints you could use your signature for documents.
Signatures were not as well known during those times in United States and also many people did not know of how to learn or how to use an signature.
There was not enough facility that times for any people learning signatures. As well even wealthy people, royal kings and presidents did not know how to use signatures and only did use their fingerprint to make sure they accepted whatever was written in the document.
The thumb print or fingerprint on a document was recognized as a authorization that the person who is suppose to agree the document has agreed the agreement.
