Difference between Primary sources and Secondary sources.
Primary sources were either created during the period being studied or were created at a later date by a participant who was present when events were being studied. Primary sources enable the researcher to get closer to what actually happened during a historical event or period. A secondary source may be a work that interprets or analyzes an historical event or phenomenon. It's generally a derivation of the event and is commonly supported by primary sources.
The key to determining whether an item could also be considered to be a primary source is to ask how soon after the event was the information obtained recorded.
When evaluating primary or secondary sources, the subsequent questions can be asked to verify the character and value of material being considered:
- How does the author know these details (names, dates, times)? Was the author present at the event or soon on the scene?
- Where does this information come from—personal experience, eyewitness accounts, or reports written by others?
- Are the author's conclusions supported by one piece of evidence, or have many sources been taken under consideration (e.g., diary entries, together with third-party eyewitness accounts, impressions of contemporaries, newspaper accounts)?
