If Arachne had changed her attitude, I think the old woman would have not punished her. It is because of her overflowing confidence and self-esteem to the point of arrogant that she did not recognize the source of talent and wisdom that angered the old woman. If only she had been a little humble and grateful for the blessings and opportunities given to her because of her skill, there is no reason to teach her  a lesson by turning her into a spider weaving all days of her life.
