۞ Formation Of Colloids

[tex]\implies[/tex] Two methods of preparing colloids are by dispersion and by condensation.

Dispersion methods involve breaking big particles to particles of colloidal size. This may be done mechanically using a colloid mill. The fine particles are then stirred in thr dispersion medium, usually water. The homogenizer used in the preparation of cheese and butter is an example of a colloid mill. Emulsions are prepared by beating or shaking one liquid into another. Then a third substance is added to make the emulsion stable.Another method employs a chemical reagent gor bteaking big particles. The reagent is called peptizing agent. The process is called peptization Clag is peptized by NaOH to form colloidal clay.

☘︎ Answers to the given questions: (Some of my answers include explanations for you to understand it well!!)

1. Smaller then the particles of a suspension but bigger than the particles of a solution.

  • The size of colloidal particles is between that of a solution and that of a suspension.

2. Particles Settle

  • Particles of colloids are too small to settle

3. A process wherein molecules of one substance are held on the surface of another substance.

  • Absorption, precipitation, and evaporation processes are defined, respectively

4. They absorb and carry along poisonous substances

  • Because colloidal particles are good adsorbents, they are good carriers for other substances.

5. Colloidal Particles Carry a uniform charge

  • Because of their uniform charge, colloidal particles move toward a given electrode under an electric force.

6. Colloidal particles have large surface area

  • As a decolorizing and deodorizing agent, activated carbon acts as an absorbent. The absorbent property is due to its large surface area.

7. Particles Have large surface area

  • The division of bug particles into smaller ones causes a larger increase in surface area. More molecules are absorbed on a large amount of exposed surface.

Things to remember about colloids: (I added this to my answer for you to understand some science Ideas about colloids hope it will be useful for your knowledge)

  • Colloids are classified according to the nature of the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium.
  • Colloids are prepared either by breaking big particles into particles of colloidal size (dispersion) ot by making small particles from clusters of molecules within colloidal range ( condensation )
  • Colloids are stable because of the presence of like charges on colloidal particles of Brownian Movement.
  • Lyophobic colloids are less stable than lyophilic colloids.
