The answer to the question, how does latitude affect climate is simple - the higher the latitude of the place is, the lesser the amount of sun light it receives. The Earth is tilted to 23.1 degrees, hence, the distribution of sunlight is unequal throughout the Earth. Imagine pointing a flashlight to a certain place: despite how strong the flashlight is, there are still places wherein the light is not visible.
What is Latitude?
Latitude refers to the distance (in angles) from the equator to a certain place in North or South pole, depending on the hemisphere. The higher the latitude is, the more oblique the sun shines become, thus, resulting to a less warming energy. Since the equator is located in the center of the Earth (divides the Earth into two hemispheres: north and south), it is able to receive sunlight directly. Because of this, the climate on the countries located near the equator are generally warm throughout the year. Examples of these include:
- Philippines
- Indonesia
- Thailand
- Malaysia, etc.
On the other hand, the places that are in higher latitudes, i.e .farther from the equator receives less sunlight. This results in having a cold temperature throughout the year. Places that experience this kind of weather include:
- Antarctica
- Arctic Poles
- Etc.
