1. A number is thrice another number. The sum of their reciprocals is 4 . Find the numbers.
2. One number is three times as large as another. The sum of their reciprocals is 4/3. Find the two numbers.

1) first convert the mathematical statements to equations. A number is thrice another number means " a=3b ". Next, the sum of reciprocals is 4 means "(1/a) + (1/b) =4". To find the value of b, we substitute the 1st equation in the 2nd one... So, "(1/3b)+(1/b)=4".. Solving this, you will get 2 values of b, b=0 and b=1/3. We consider 1/3 and disregard 0. Since b=1/3, we can now find the value of a,.. a=3b.... a=3(1/3).... a=1...So the two numbers are 1 and 1/3. 2. Same w/ no.1, first convert the mathematical statements to equations. A number is thrice another number means " a=3b ". Next, the sum of reciprocals is 4/3 means "(1/a) + (1/b) =4/3". To find the value of b, we substitute the 1st equation in the 2nd one...
