The Battle with Grendel:
Beowulf is strong - hearted, courageous, and worthy to become a ruler.
In the poem it is read that Beowulf after witnessing what Grendel had done with the sleeping warriors to make food for himself began to demonstrate courage to save himself from Grendel's grasp and be killed. He bent back and leaned up in one arm ans was able to bind Grendel so tight that he could not move to flee and leave King Hrothgar’s splendid mead hall, Heorot. Grendel then grapples with Beowulf, whose powerful grip he cannot escape. He wrenches himself free, tearing off his arm, and leaves, physically wounded. Because of his braveness and his strong heart, everyone else in the hall were saved from Grendel's greed.
The following day everyone rejoices in Heorot. But that night as the warriors sleep, Grendel’s mother came to avenge her son. She had killed one of Hrothgar’s men. In the morning Beowulf seeks her out in her cave at the bottom of a mere and kills her. He cuts the head from Grendel’s corpse and returns to Heorot. The Danes rejoice once more. Hrothgar makes a farewell speech about the character of the true hero, as Beowulf, enriched with honors and princely gifts, returns home to King Hygelac of the Geats.
