in lines 13 and 14 ,what is compared to reputation

Sagot :

Seven Ages of Men:

In the 13th and 14th lines of the poem, reputation is compared to a bubble. Bubble aside from being a thin ball of water that encloses air or gas also refers to a dream, a daydream, or a fantasy just like a momentary period of a very prosperous economic performance in a specific country or region that is usually followed by breakdown.

Analysis:

  • When a reputation is compared to a bubble it only means that the character of that individual is just an idea or too good to be true. In the poem it is mentioned that the one seeking the bubble reputation is the soldier who is full of fancy promises, desires for honor, impulsive, and swift in quarrel. This only shows that sometimes soldiers can actually make themselves appear to be of good character, someone to look up to, an upright and good example. However, at a certain point they can be the total opposite of what we expect them to be. Since they are humans too, they are also prone to imperfections and weaknesses. So, they are not always what they perceive them to be.
  • Comparing a reputation to a bubble is also a form of being too idealistic especially when it is tied with being a soldier. Soldiers can likewise be idealistic. They are often looking for impossible things to happen. Inasmuch as they are trained to be disciplined in all things and to aim for the best. They always have the desire to look for alternatives and with no hesitations they will go for what they think is right. However, they are always after their superiors’ instruction. They will not do it unless it is permitted by their superiors.
  • Lastly, when bubbles are punctured with holes they are beginning to lose their composure. Comparing this to the reputation of a soldier, it may appear that this soldier once plagued with challenges has its tendency to lose its composure. He tends not to perform in the way that is expected of him due to pressures and anxieties. We know for a fact that the role of the soldiers are very challenging tasks and no one can ever survive their world without going through the different tests they have to pass. Surprisingly, there are soldiers who have passed these tests but still unable to manage themselves in the battlefield since there is a huge difference between simulation and the real battle.
