For me, Imperialism means the policy of extending a country’s authority over another country by colonization or by other means and becoming one’s dominion. Like Spanish colonization in the Philippines, imperialism had significant effects on the colonized country:

1. Economic Exploitation: For their part, the Spanish colonizers had been exploiting the Philippines both in mineral resources like metals, agricultural produce and particularly labor particularly through the tabacco trade. The primary outcome of the Spanish colonialism in the Philippines was that the Spanish received much wealth while theFilipinos struggled to make ends meet.

2. Cultural Suppression: Spaniards likewise subjugated the Filipino people’s culture, religion as well as language; this resulted to the extinction of indigenous practices and animistic beliefs. It also changed the Filipino cultural identity and heritage in the long-term manner thanks to the cultural imperialism.

3. Political Oppression: A similar view was given political rights of the Filipino people were limited by the Spanish colonial government, they lacked the freedom of making their own decisions. Through time, the indigenous people did not get much say with the way their own territories were being governed, resulting to resentment and rebellion against the colonial government.

4. Social Injustice: The Spanish colonial administration engaged in practices that denigrated the Filipino people and favored Spanish aristocracy. Alongside this, social stratification of the society on the basis of race and ethnicity that defined the American culture deepened social prejudice, inequalities and marginalization.

5. Resistance and Independence Movements: Such was the culture of oppression the Spanish imperialism instilled in the people of Philippines, several resistances and independence struggles were witnessed. Such activists as Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio then become ordinary’s leaders against the colonial masters leading to the Philippine Revolution and subsequent declaration of independence in 1898.
