coastal trading post in pre-colonial times. Chinese vessels sailing from the
South China Sea (now known as West Philippine Sea) came to Isla de
Vigan through the Mestizo River that surrounded the island. They came
here to barter goods from Asian kingdoms in exchange for gold, beeswax,
and other mountain products brought down by natives from the
Cordilleras.
Most of these Chinese later on settled in Vigan, intermarried with the
nativ Viganons.
Its founder, Don Juan de Salcedo arrived in Vigan on June 12, 1572.
He named the place “Villa Fernandina de Vigan” in honor of King Philip II’s
son, Prince Ferdinand. In 1574, Don Juan brought with him some
Augustinian missionaries that pioneered the evangelization of Ilocos. By
1645, Vigan was already divided into 21 barangays. The Chinese had their
own place of settlement called “pariancillo” while the Spaniards were in a
villa called “Villa de los Españoles” and in 1890, one of the Chinese settlers
in Vigan set up the first jar factory which started the Burnay industry in
the historic city.
