(be-verbs:  is, are, am; was, were)

Examples in different tenses of the verb:

Simple Present Tense
Active:  Mary washes the dishes everyday.
Passive:  The dishes is washed by May everyday.

Present Continuous:
Active:  Mary is washing the dishes.
Passive:  The dishes is being washed by Mary.

Simple Past:
Active:  Mary washed the dishes.
Passive:  The dishes were washed by Mary.

Past continuous:
Active: Mary was washing the dishes when her friend called.
Passive:  The dishes was being washed by Mary when her friend called.

If you want to change an active-voice sentence to passive voice, consider carefully who or what is performing the action expressed in the verb, and then make that agent the object of a "by the..." phrase. Make what is acted upon the subject of the sentence, and change the verb to a form of be + past participle.
