Well, there is this thing called the hydrological cycle. Water at the surface of the earth evaporates and enters the atmosphere in its gaseous state. Now you have a humid air mass, it gets blown around by air currents - winds. When this humid air mass encounters a mountain it can only go up (with the prevailing wind). As the humid air mass rises one of the laws of thermodynamics comes into play and the water vapor in the air mass begins to turn back to water (it’s liquid state) because the temperature drops due to the increase in elevation. It therefore rains at the top of the mountain. If it is exceptionally high you will get snow, if it is not too high you will get rain. Examples of this can be seen in Wales (UK) where humid air masses come in from westerly winds blowing across the Atlantic ocean and the Welsh mountains cause the precipitation. And so it rains a lot in Wales. Another example is the Sierras of California, these are so high that the temperature drops considerably and so you get snow. And that is how water gets up into the mountains.
