Maglalatik Dance

The Maglalatik is a folk dance from the Philippines performed by male dancers. Coconut shell halves are secured onto the dancers' hands and on vests upon which are hung four or six more coconut shell halves.

It originated in the town of Binan in the Laguna province of the Filipino Islands and is also performed as homage to the town saint, San Isidro de Labrador. How is it performed? Maglalatik is an original native dance of the Philippines in which the coconut halves are attached to the torso of the dancer.

Findings revealed that the prominent dance steps in the Philippine local dance Maglalatik are the (1) jogging, (2) forward-backward step, (3) arm swing, and (4) 8 quick clap cycles.

This dance is composed of a four-part performance and the first two performance of the dance is called as the 'Palipasan' and the 'Baligtaran'. In these first two performances, the dance will show the opposing squads in an intense battle. The last two parts of the dance are the 'Paseo' and the 'Sayaw Escaramusa'.
