To me, one of the beautiful things about art is the fact that each work is perceived in different ways depending on a person’s background or views. Another thing that makes a piece unique is what it means to its creator. If a person wants to show Filipino pride, and believes that he can better express this using the English language, then by all means, he should do so. Whatever works for the artist, and in whatever language he feels most comfortable with, he should apply it in order to fully convey and deliver his intended message. Noli Mi Tangere, one of the most revolutionary and known books to Filipino literature, was written in Spanish. It was not written in Filipino. That, however, did not lessen the “Filipino-ness” and essence of the tale. It still served its purpose of conveying a strong, powerful message on life during the Spanish occupation. It was able to use intricate characters such as Ibarra, Padre Damaso and Elias, in a well-written plot that inspired Filipinos to revolt against the Spaniards that maltreated them. Whether a piece be in Spanish, English, or even French, as long as it is able to deliver its intended message and inspire Filipinos, or perhaps even give foreigners an appreciation of the Philippines, it definitely has the right amount of “Filipino-ness”.
