While it is not my personal wish, the reasons for wanting to be part of the student council are varied.
For one, being in the student council is an immediate status symbol. It is often the case that only the role-model students are accepted into the student council, and thus being among the elite of one’s school immediately casts a more favorable image upon oneself. Plus, even if one’s overall contributions to the council were minimal, being part of it will always look good on one’s curriculum.
Secondly, and less cynically, there are many young students who have a more political/administrative knack, and thus naturally flock and campaign for a place in their school’s council/parliament/class rep/etc. But often, rather than holding civilized and informative sessions, these campaigns usually devolve into a competition of nerds vs. jocks, at least from my own experience.
