Do you have a standard piece of notebook paper sitting next to you to jot down notes as you read? If so, you actually have an example of a quadrilateral sitting next to you! A quadrilateral is a two-dimensional and four-sided shape. The four points where the sides meet are called the vertices of the quadrilateral, and the line segments connecting vertices on opposite corners are called the diagonals of the quadrilateral.
You may be thinking that the term quadrilateral seems to cover a lot of different shapes if it just means that it has four sides. You are right! There are many types of quadrilaterals. Some quadrilaterals you have probably heard of such as a rectangle or a square, while you may not be familiar with other quadrilaterals such as a rhombus or an isosceles trapezoid. The image below shows some different types of quadrilaterals and their properties.
Consider our piece of notebook paper again. We see that it has four sides, opposite sides are parallel and the same length, diagonals have the same length, and its vertices are right angles. Based on this, we see that the piece of paper satisfies the properties of a parallelogram and of a rectangle, so this quadrilateral would be classified as both.
