In present age:

Let x be the May's age

Then let 3x be the April's age

In 7 yrs ago:

Five years ago from now, May's age

  • x + 5

Five years ago from now, April's age

  • 3x + 5

The sum of their ages will be 114.

  • (May'age) + (April's age) = 114
  • (x + 5) + (3x + 5) = 114

In equation:

  • (x + 5) + (3x + 5) = 114

Solve the value of x which is the May's age to the problem equations.

  • (x + 5) + (3x + 5) = 114
  • 4x + 10 = 114
  • 4x = 114 - 10
  • 4x = 104
  • 4x/4 = 104/4
  • x = 26

Substitute the April's age to the present age which is the value of x to the solving the problem equation.

  • April's age = 3x + 5
  • April's age = 3(26) + 5
  • April's age = 78 + 5
  • April's age = 83

Checking:

Checking the age's if the answer is correct. If the May is 26 years old and April is 83 years old.
