Animals can be divided into two to groups these are: vertebrates and invertebrates. The difference between this to groups is the presence of a backbone. Vertebrates have backbones while invertebrates do not. Organisms under these two groups can be further categorized based on their anatomy, feeding habits, movement, reproduction, components of organ systems, adaptions, and more.

The presence of the backbone, is the common characteristic among vertebrates. The backbone provides/contains axial support ans houses the spinal cord. At the end of the spinal cord is the enlarged brain.
