Despite the fact that moral relativism was not widely discussed in philosophy or elsewhere until the twentieth century, it has a long history. Both the historian Herodotus and the sophist Protagoras appeared to support some type of relativism in the ancient Greek culture (the latter attracted the attention of Plato in the Theaetetus). It's also worth noting that Zhuangzi, an ancient Chinese Daoist philosopher, advocated for a non-objectivist viewpoint that's commonly mistaken for relativism.
In metaethics, moral relativism is a hot topic. Outside of philosophy (for example, by political and religious leaders), it is a contentious topic among both philosophers and nonphilosophers. Given recent evidence that people's perceptions of moral relativism vary greatly, this is maybe not surprising. Despite the fact that many philosophers are critical of moral relativism, there are a number of contemporary philosophers who support it in some form. The word "moral relativism" can be interpreted in a number of different ways. It is frequently linked to a metaethical thesis that the validity or justification of moral judgements is not absolute, but relative to a person's or group's moral standard, as well as an empirical thesis that there are deep and widespread moral differences.
