Folklore is the definitive body of culture shared by a certain group of people, and it includes the traditions that are unique to that culture, subculture, or community. Tales, proverbs, and jokes are examples of oral traditions. They include material culture, which includes anything from traditional building styles to group-specific handcrafted toys. Customary lore, acting on traditional beliefs, the forms and rituals of festivals such as Christmas and weddings, folk dances, and initiation ceremonies are all part of folklore. Each of these is regarded a folklore item, whether alone or in combination. Folklore involves the transfer of these artifacts from one region to another or from one generation to the next, which is just as important as the form.
Folklore isn't usually taught in school or studied in the fine arts. Rather, these customs are passed down orally or through demonstration from one person to the next. Folklore studies, also known as folkloristics, is an academic study of folklore that is available at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
