Higher plants and animals are generally diploid, which means they have two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Aneuploidy, on the other hand, refers to the gain and loss of one or two chromosomes, such as monosomy (2n-1), trisomy (2n+1), and nullisomy (2n-2). Aneuploidy is caused by chromosome nondisjunction during cell division and accounts for a variety of chromosomal abnormalities.

Monosomy-Turner syndrome, trisomy-Down syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and other forms of aneuploidy are examples of aneuploidy.
