Athens = was named after the Greek Goddess of wisdom Athena. One day King Cecrops held a contest for the patronage of his city Athena and Poseidon joined, the deities each presented their gifts. Poseidon was first and he lifted his Trident and came forth a well, but when the people came to taste the water it was salty so it cannot benefit the people in the city. Athena was next, she buried something in the ground, which grew into an olive tree, it provided the citizens of the city not only food, but oil to light their lamps, and wood to build boats and houses. But, Poseidon was angry because of this. So he cursed Athens with water shortage which still happens today.
