ice is less dense than liquid water because as water approaches freezing its molecules rearrange, as this happens it forms crystals and expands. If it is less than water it will sink making the ocean water level rise, this will affect life on earth because ocean water might reach dry land causing changes in the salinity of soil that will affect the growth of plants and other organisms
