1. Read the following paragraphs about some Oriental art forms, and then answer the questions that follow. 1) There are many similarities between the dances of India and those of Bali, Indonesia. The finger and hand gestures are the same: the body movements are likewise similar. However, the music is different. Whereas, the dancers in India use the traditional sitar, vina, and flute, the Balinese use percussion instruments. This is because the Balinese perform outdoor as most of the time, while Indians usually hold performances either on a stage or in a covered courtyard, generally indoors. 2) For all its modernity, Japan remains a country steeped in tradition. It still adheres to its centuries-old art forms. Aside from Ikebana (the art of flower -arranging) and origami (the art of paper folding), an enduring art form is the Kabuki, a theatrical performance that goes back to the 1500's. Kabuki combines words, music, dancing, and lavish costumes and make-up. In this aspect, it is similar to the Philippines' Komedya a play which dramatizes events involving kings, queens, princes and princesses in kingdom of Europe and Africa of the Middle Ages. Just like the Kabuki, the Komedya is a spectacle of a performance. What makes Kabuki different from Komedya and from other Asia dramas is the former's use of an all-male cast who act out even the female role.
