Concepts that need to be considered when rounding numbers
The place value that needs to be rounded.
Consider the number next to the place value that needs to be rounded.
If the proceeding number is five or more, add 1 to the place value that is to be rounded.
If the proceeding number is less than five, keep the same number of the place value that is to be rounded, and change the numbers to zero next to it if there's any.
Let's take for an example. Round the number 0.594 to the nearest hundredths.
Notice that the place value that is the hundredths place is 9 and the number proceeding of 9 is 4 which is less than 5. So we keep the same value until the hundredths place and change the following number/s to zero.
The answer should be 0.590 or 0.59.
Let's make use of the same example but this time we will round it to the nearest tenths.
Notice that the place value that is in the tenths place is 5 and the number proceeding of 5 is 9 which is greater than 5. So we add 1 on the place value that we are rounding, 5+1=65+1=6 , and change the following numbers to zero.
The answer should be 0.600 or 0.6.
Solutions
If we write five decimals that round to 0.96, we need to have a thousandths place or a third number next to 6 that is not equal to or greater than 5. The reason for this is that we need to keep the original number.
Or we have another option, we can have a number that starts with 0.95 but we will add a thousandths place or a third number next to 5 that is equal to or greater than 5. The reason is that we can add 1 on the hundredths place to make it 0.96.
