how to add dissimilar dractions?

Sagot :

Dissimilar fractions are fractions that have different denominators.

   Example:

      2/4 , 3/5, 7/8

1/3 + 3/4

(1) Find for the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators.
          LCM of 3 and 4 = 12

(2) Make another fraction by putting the LCM in the denominator and leaving the numerator blank.

        ⇒     ---------
                  12

   (3) Divide the LCM by the denominator of the first and second fraction, and then multiply the answer to the numerator of the first and second fraction respectively.

       1/3 + 3/4

       12 ÷ 3 = 4 ⇒ 4 × 1 = 4
       12 ÷ 4 = 3 ⇒ 3 × 3 = 9

The answer will be our new numerator, well of course, respectively separated by the plus or the addition sign.

         4             9
       -------  +   -------
         12          12

  (4) Now that they already have the same denominator, add them already.

          4/12 + 9/ 12 = 13/12

The answer is 13/12.
