the state of matter depends on the force that hold   particles of matter together. therefore if the between them is weak this will then produce a gaseous matter, if the is moderate it will give us a liquid material and if the force between them is great this will produce solid material. Hydrocarbon compounds exist in all 3 phases of matter. Methane with a formula of CH4 is gaseous., ethanol with a formula of CH3CH2OH is liquid, while several forms of solid hydrocarbons exists like protein and carbohydrate.
