Lewis electron dot structure show the symbol of the element and its valence electrons.  The steps in writing this are

1. get the atomic number of the element, this also corresponds to its electron number.  

2. write its electronic configuration to get its valence electrons. Valence electrons are  the electrons on the outermost shell.
