Balance the following chemical equation: H2O+CaCl=HCl+Ca+O2

Sagot :

2H2O + 2CaCl2 = 4HCl + 2Ca + O2

H = 4 H = 4

O = 2 Cl = 4

Ca = 2 Ca = 2

Cl = 4 O = 2

Note: Calcium Chloride's formula is CaCl2 not CaCl

Step by step process:

Oxygen(O) on the product has 2 coefficients which make the oxygen contain 2 atoms, however the oxygen on the reactant had only 1 atom;

H2O 2 H atoms + 1 O atom

therefore, to balance, I add 2 atoms beside H2O therefore it became,

2H2O 4 H atoms + 2 O atoms

you don't need to worry anymore on oxygen, but on the product, there's also a hydrogen.

HCl 1 H atom + 1 Cl atom

to balance the hydrogen from both sides, I add 4 beside it.

4HCl 4 H atoms + 4 Cl atoms

Hydrogen is done, but Chlorine now gains 4 atoms, so to balance again the equation, I add 2 beside the Chlorine on the reactant.

from, CaCl2 to 2CaCl2

2CaCl2 = 2 Ca atoms + 4 Cl atoms

Chlorine is also done, then the last problem is the Calcium which contains only 1 atom on the product, so to balance again the equation I add the same atoms I had with the same element on reactant to the product.

therefore from Ca it became 2Ca,

2Ca = 2 Ca atoms

Tip: For you to clearly and quickly analyze if it’s balanced, try to list down all the elements first and how much atoms they had by multiplying the coefficients beside them.
