2.6.2 Sardine/pilchard and other clupeoids

Sardines and pilchards fall into the Clupeidae family. This includes sardines, pilchards, menhaden, herring, shad, sprat and other Clupeidae fish. Sardines and pilchards are landed by 11 countries and they represent 30% of the landings. Atlantic and Gulf menhaden represent 7% of the Clupeidae fish and are caught primarily in the USA, although other menhaden landings have been reported in Argentina and Brazil. Menhaden, sprat and thread herring are caught for fishmeal and oil production while the other Clupeidae fish may be used for food products. Using the previous described ‘what if’ calculations we have a potential 175 100 t of fish oil. However, at the present time, herring, sprat and shad might not be suitable because of the low omega-3 content of the oil. This reduces the total sardine/pilchard oil potential to 129 900 t. These calculations are shown in Table 2.9.
