ARTIST: GERARDO DE LEON, born as Gerardo Ilagan, was a medical doctor by profession but his passion for film arts led him to his prolific career as an actor and director. His first job was as a pianist at the Cine Moderno in Quiapo, Manila, where he played musical scores for silent films.

Lauded for his skill in depicting light and form, Amorsolo is well known for his paintings of idyllic Philippine rural life. He rejected Western ideals of beauty and sought to promote Filipino beauty instead, and his use of chiaroscuro became an artistic trademark that set his work apart from the rest.

LITERATURE

ARTIST: DR. JOSE RIZAL is remembered as a great hero and the voice of the Filipino people during colonization by the Spaniards in the late 19th century. He fought for peaceful reforms through his writings while exposing the ills that beset the country. A prolific writer, he wrote his novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo" to expose the ills of Philippine society;government corruption, abuse; and on a larger scale, the effects of colonization on people's lives.

MUSIC

ARTIST: LEVI CELERIO, is a prolific lyricist and composer for decades. He effortlessly translated/wrote anew the lyrics to traditional melodies: “O Maliwanag Na Buwan” (Iloko), “Ako ay May Singsing” (Pampango), “Alibangbang” (Visaya) among others.

Born in Tondo, Celerio received his scholarship at the Academy of Music in Manila that made it possible for him to join the Manila Symphony Orchestra, becoming its youngest member. He made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the only person able to make music using just a leaf.

THEATER

ARTIST: LAMBERTO VERA AVELLANA, named National Artist for Film in 1976, Lamberto Vera Avellana was also a prominent stage director. He graduated from the Ateneo in 1937 where he developed an interest in theater that would last a lifetime. In 1935, at the age of 20, he played Joan of Arc in one of the productions celebrating Ateneo’s diamond jubilee. This production was directed by Fr. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ, and even at that young age, Avellana assisted the director while also playing the lead role.

ARTIST: ILDEFONSO PAEZ SANTOS JR., or otherwise known as IP Santos, is a distinguished Filipino architect known for his works conducive to social interaction.

In 1954, he got his degree in Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas and then pursued his master’s degree at the University of Southern California School of Architecture. From there, he started his profession and has since created some of the most outstanding works in Philippine History.
