Newton recorded his thoughts in notebooks and pocketbooks, well aware of the possibility of losing good ideas if he did not do so. He had a meticulous and systematic approach to organising and categorising information, knowledge, experiments and ideas. Newton learnt from those before him, by studying and reading. He would question and challenge assumptions and expand on existing knowledge, both his own and that of others.
