In the Allegory of The Cave, Plato says that there are three stages/levels of human cognition: imagination, belief, and understanding. Plato also says that mankind lives in a cave, held captive. He says they are prisoners, and that what they see are only figments of their imagination. He says that Education is the force that brings mankind out of the cave in order for them to fully see the light and understand the truth.
