The Farmer and the Soit Erosion
(Mary Grace
There was a young farmer. He was fond of planting different crops the compostes
tomatoes, and carrots.
One day his father asked him to water their crops carrying a pas he went immediately
to the river to get water As he watered the crops the water flowed trom a higher aren to the
lower portion of the farm, carrying topsoil and exposing som ocks and pebbles that were
much denser than the soil. When he looked around, he noticed that the soul where they planted
their crops was more into rocks and pebbles He took some sol, he found out that was very
dry and easily broke into smaller particles
The young farmer informed his father about his observations. They went to visit their
local agrarian office to ask for help The next morning, the agriculturist visited their farm. They
were informed that they should practice different ways on how to prevent soil erosion such as
terracing, contour plowing, strip cropping, ripnapping and reforestation Terracing involves
planung on terraces or steps built on the slopes of mountainsides Farmers build unde flat rows
of terraces on mountainsides to act as a ridge to help slow down the flow of water that carries
sod. Strip cropping involves aitemately planting different crops in strips These crops are
planted across the slope too. The strip crops lessen soil erosion since they hold much water
in the soll Riprapping is building ripraps or chunks of stones ar rocks arranged on the edge of
a slope. This arrangement of stones does not just serve as a foundation but also a ridge to
control soil erosion. When rain pours down, most of the soil camed down the slope is deposited
on the ripraps. Reforestation is done by planting young trees to replace cld ones that have
been cut down. Furthermore, the agriculturist advised them that continuous use of land without
resting is not a good habit for the soil.
Hearing all the suggestions, the young farmer was very eager to try the tips given by
the agriculturist. From then on, the young farmer and his father practiced conservaton of soil.
