I cannot recall any incident that Rizal was brutalized by the Spanish officers themselves. Up to death, the officers remained gentlemen. He requested that he be shot facing the firing squad but was refused. But when he requested to at least spare his head, the officer oblidged. I am still trying to recall of any incident before that but there is none. Even the officers in Dapitan did not abuse him. Although re riduculed the alferez in his books yet had a peninsular officer as a hero.
But after the execution, Rizal’s body was dishonored and refused a Christian burial. His body was omly wrapped in cloth then thrown in an unmarked grave in some cemetery. But Rizal’s relatives blame the friars for this and not the government. When Rizal was finally given a Christian burial in the 1900s, the Rizal family forbid any priests to attend, even Filipino priests. They had blamed the disrespect of Rizal’s body to the Church.
