Answer:
Depends on whether the illiterate person is a child, adult, including a senior citizen which determines the approach. If a child, from the womb, to before a child starts school, a parent can read to them. Dr. Seuss or something rhythmic this stimulates the listening skills through rhyme. Colorful pictures and the parent sounds out the words. (in the womb, simply read a board book or something short, a child can hear you and that is how they recognize the voices of their mother and father once they are born). A child does what you do and may not independently do what you say. Read yourself, find a good book, go to the public library, make it fun to read. As they get older, don’t try to force your child to read or make it a source of a punishment, read, encourage your child to read. When a child becomes a teenager, remember they enjoy reading differently. A girl may like romance, fiction, a boy may like instead graphic novels, true crime, non-fiction, etc. They do not read the same, so when a parent says “my son does not read,” the parent needs to take him to a bookstore or library and allow him to tell the parent what he likes to read by being on his own to find out and then go from there. Usually, a teen will read, just need to find out the interest and don’t force it.
Now, for an adult, it has to be something which is required or something which is a passion for a purpose to learn. First, the hurdle is to get over being embarrassed. There are some adults who have hidden the fact they can not read and are able to mask this shortcoming. Some adults can read some, but not very well. The approach must be to have patience. There are so many reasons why a person can not read and it does not negate the fact that person may possess an abundance of knowledge and common sense. Simply along the way, that person lacked for whatever reason the ability to grasp the skills of reading and the importance of it for them. Interview them, find out what they need to learn to read for or what they are interested in. Interview them and maybe the mystery of what they like to read or the reason they are as an adult trying to learn to read will be apparent. Go from there. Remember they have become an adult and only now attempting to learn to read. The quest is a daunting one for an adult enough without being shamed, or degraded, embarrassed. Once again, patience, empathy, how would one feel if they knew they had become an adult and still lacked the essential skill of reading?
A person who is illiterate is at a great disadvantage. Even though we have reached the age of technology, still reading is even more of a necessity. In order to use technology, reading is still an essential skill. If one is looking up some information on a computer or other technology, one must be able to read what is offered in order to distinguish whether it answers the question or not. One must be able to distinguish what an individual or unreliable source has provided and thus lacks merit from something which is valid information which successfully answers the question. This can not be done if the person lacks reading skills. This is why literacy is so very important?
