This is due to the fact the gravitational fields tend to slow things down.
Think of the wave of light as a rod rolling along in a straight line. Now if you put some restriction on one end if the rod, and slowed that end a bit, the rod will change direction. As light does around large objects, the larger the object the more noticeable is the bending of the light.
