I have some advanced students who could easily complete a week’s worth of lessons in just one day at home, if they could be taught at their own pace and without the distractions of their not-so-advanced classmates.
So much of the school day for a teacher isn’t spent teaching, but maintaining discipline and motivating unmotivated students. Since that often happens in the same room and with the same teacher who is teaching the advanced students, it takes time away from them.
Think back to your school days. Do you remember being bored because the material was too easy for you? Do you remember a lot of wasted time waiting for your classmates to settle down, listen, and understand what the teacher was saying?
Imagine if an entire year’s worth of curriculum were put online for students. They could do it at home and have it checked by a teacher at school. The whole class could get together once per week, since face-to-face interaction is also important.
Students who couldn’t handle that level of freedom could come to school like normal. The teacher would have fewer students in the class, and thus more time to help the students who need the most help.
Think of a school’s curriculum like a gym. Some people are professional athletes. Some people barely walk all day. To have everyone in that gym doing the same exercises at the same pace is doing a disservice to the people on the extreme ends of the ability levels, but to the pro athletes in particular. They have the most to lose by a uniform workout.
