The basis of scientists in dividing earth's lithosphere into several plates is the Geologic events or activities itself. Through these, they will know the other reasons of the land formations. For example, when the two plates bump each other or collides, it creates a high form of land like mountain range or other high type of land. It merges to create another form of land.
