1. Define set.

A set is a collection or group of well-defined and well-distinguished objects that follow a certain common rule.

Example:

a. a set of Nike shoes
b. the set of people attending Mae's birthday party

2.) Illustrate the following:

A. Subset

A set A is a subset of set B if every element of A is an element of B.

Example:

1. Let X = {a,e,i,o,u}, Y = {a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z} 

Set X is a subset of set Y because every element of X is an element of Y.

2. Let A = {1,2,3}, B = {1,2,3,4}

Set A is a subset of set B because every element of A is an element of B.

B. Empty Set

An empty set (or null set) is a set that contains no element. It is denoted by { }.

Example: 

a. the set of month containing less than 15 days
b. the set of month having more than 31 days

C. Universal Set

Universal set is a set containing all of the elements of interest in a particular situation. 

Example:

a. the set of oranges in a fruit seller's shop is a subset of the universal set of fruits in the shop
b. the set of the consonants is a subset of the universal set of the letters found in the alphabet.
