These are the explanation for each stages of tropical cyclones

Tropical Depression (TD) - A storm that reaches less or equal to 61 kph (33 nautical miles, which is knots) in terms of sustained winds. Damages vary from little to mild.

Tropical Storm (TS) - This is when a storm reaches maximum wind speeds of 62 - 88 kph (or 34 - 47 knots). Damages vary from moderate to severe.

Severe Tropical Storm (STS) - It is when a storm reaches maximum wind speeds of 89 - 117 kph (or 48 - 63 knots). Damages may be severe.

Typhoon (TY) - A tropical cyclone category wherein a storm reaches maximum wind speeds of 118 - 220 kph (or 64 - 120 knots). Damages may vary from severe to heavy.

Super Typhoon (STY) - The strongest typhoon category amongst all of the typhoon categories. Maximum sustained winds can reach >220 kph (or >120 knots). Damages may vary from catastrophic to widespread.
