What is Cnidarians?

Phylum Cnidaria is a known species in the some bodies of water, in which they are characterized as:

  • soft-bodied animals
  • contains a single, hollow, central cavity that is being surrounded by the tentacles

The animals under this phylum has cnidocytes.

What is Cnidocytes?

Cnidocytes are those cells that brings poisonous and stinging organelles known as "nematocysts".

Nematocysts is characterized as tiny harpoon and is the mechanism used by these organisms to reach their prey.

There are two types of cnidarians. These are:

  • polyp
  • medusa

POLYP

  • cylinder or vase-like shaped cnidarians
  • has an opening on the upper part (dorsal) surface and their tentacles are pointed upward.
  • they are sessile (direct bond from the base)

MEDUSA

  • umbrella or bell-like shaped cnidarians
  • has mouth on the lower (ventral) part surface, having tentacles pointed downward
