2x + x = 36

3x = 36

3x/3  = 36/3 (to get the value of x we must divide both side by 3)

x= 12

Xhendric = (x)= 12 yrs old          Kian = 2(12) = 24 yrs old

2.  Let x be the smaller number

Bigger number: x+3        Smaller number: x

x + (x+3) = 81

2x+3 = 81

to get the value of x we must first eliminate all numbers beside x, which is +3. to eliminate it we must transpose or move it to the other side of the equation, beside 81.

2x = 81-3

( when we transpose a number their sign changes if its positive it becomes negative and if its negative it becomes positive.)

2x = 78 ( To get the value of x, we must divide both sides by 2)

2x/2 =78/2

x= 39

Bigger number : x + 3 = (39)+ 3 = 42

Smaller number: x = 39
