High tides occur when the sun and moon are in a line. The gravitational pull of the moon and sun are pulling the water of the earth so the water is high. Low tides occur during first and last quarter of the moon. the sun and moon are perpendicular to the earth (giving respect to the earth). the moon has more of the gravitational pull because it is nearest to the earth.
